Nothing like waking up to a continued debate about coffee on conference morning...

can't do a screenshot... sorry
Kyle Olson
Okay I've got an honest question for those of you that are LDS. So I know coffee is frowned upon. But is it the caffeine? Cuz I constantly see people with sodas and energy drinks. So what makes coffee different than a Diet Coke
    • Lexie Hunsaker It's this never ending circle. I talked to my sister in law who
    • Victoria Tuakimoana Toa I don't know how to explain well which I should probably learn to do but all I can say is that it's what the Lord wants so you just do it without question. And personally I think it smells nasty haha.. even if I wasn't LDS I'd still not drink coffee but that's just me
    • Lexie Hunsaker Who is very Mormon and tried to explain it. Apparently the caffeine is ok in soda because it isn't a hot drink and even though hot cocoa has it it doesn't have a lot of caffeine so its ok. Which to me is just a load of bull poop that makes no sense and they contradict themselves with these rules they create because one thing is fine but another isn't. Idk if my comment made much sense or if I sound like I'm rambling.
    • Victoria Tuakimoana Toa Okay so I asked on of my friends and he basically said the same that if the Lord commands it then that's what you should do. Gods ways are not the same as mans ways and we're not always going to understand but if it's what He wants then that's it. For those who are LDS who believe in the Lord giving us blessings and have faith in His living prophets who speak His words, then you'll follow Him and believe that when you follow his commandments and prophets then you'll recieve blessings. Anyways that's all. I'll stop now, hope that helped you somewhat :)
    • Dakota Cordingley It's not the caffeine that is a problem it is the sheer addiction that is a problem.. And if soda becomes an addiction it too is advised against in our church...
    • Delanie Rae Kimura But there are also those people who are addicted to energy drinks yet pass the sacrament? So my every once in awhile coffee is frowned apon. I don't know Kyle never made sense to me!
    • Cooper Jolley Victoria, did the lord command it or did a man from earth say it? Cause I haven't seen any memo's in the sky posted by God/
    • Lexie Hunsaker Well the anti oxidants and other things found in coffee have so many health benefits. If you drink one cup a day you can reduce your chances of many cancers including breast, prostate and many brain cancers. So tell me, why is something that can help you live a longer healthier life taught from Gods 'deciples' to not drink it? It's one thing if you're having 4 cups a day and can't live without it, but one cup a morning is doing more good than harm.
    • Cooper Jolley Dakota, if you can't drink something that is addicting therefore you can't drink water because you go through painful withdrawls, usually resulting in death, if you don't drink it, and can't function without it. Therefore it is a sin to drink water by your standards
    • Carla Stanford Here is an answer for the LDS people trying to explain.
"I never drink any of the cola drinks and my personal hope would be that no one would. However, they are not included in the Word of Wisdom in its technical application. I quote from a letter from the secretary of the First Presidency, “But the spirit of the Word of Wisdom would be violated by the drinking or eating of anything that contained a habit-forming drug.” With reference to the cola drinks, the Church has never officially taken any attitude on this but I personally do not put them in the class as with the tea and coffee because the Lord specifically mentioned them…I might say also that strychnine and sleeping pills and opium and heroin are not mentioned in the Word of Wisdom and yet I would discourage them with all my power." (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, edited by Edward L. Kimball, p. 202.)
    • Carla Stanford For Kyle, from your Dr. Pepper drinking friend, The Word of Wisdom is a guide for keeping your body healthy and obeying the Lord. We know it's not healthy, but that is what free agency is all about. We can choose to abuse our bodies.
    • Stanford ‎@Cooper, You don't go through withdrawals with water. Sounds like your issue isn't with coffee or energy drinks.
    • Cooper Jolley Addicted:1.Physically and mentally dependant on a particular substance, and being unable to stop taking it without incurring adverse effects. Therefore you are addicted to water. If you stop taking the substance which you are addicted to then you go through withdrawls. Withdrawls from water include: headaches, dehydration, possible hallucinations, fatigue, cravings, and possibly death. Yes Ms. Stanford, you go through withdrawls 20 hours ago ·
    • Natalie Passey Geez Kyle, way to start a huge debate!! Carla: "from your dr pepper drinking friend" ha ha LOVE YOU!
    • Alex Marietti Sounds like somebody grew up in Utah hating the Mormons calm down Cooper its just a FB post go write a blog and yes you are addicted to water, but the majority of people don't say you're addicted to it its just a life necessity like oxygen and food.
    • Alex Marietti lol good points tho
    • Alex Marietti awh deleted posts cooper? now it looks like I'm talking to myself.....afraid of what people might say about what you said?
    • Cooper Jolley I'm just passionate about religion simply because I get treated like a rapist, murder, drug addict, you name it, just because I am not mormon. + I was going to repost in one sentence but you beat me to the share button.
    • Alex Marietti Its not Mormons bro its religious nut jobs they're everywhere and don't act like every single Mormon is like that because I know that they aren't. It's just cuz you are in Utah you mainly see the Mormons doing it and excluding you which is reasonable I've seen it before, but the fact is that there are bad people all over the place whether they're Catholics Mormons Hindus or Muslims they just hate you cuz you don't believe what they believe so you just gotta say FUCK EM can't make everyone happy right
    • Cooper Jolley To the people that are curious I just stated that I was 15 about five spaces up
    • Taylor Ewell interesting Conversation going on from the looks of it. there are ways in understanding the whole Coffee thing thru the Church's Websites or by it's various leaders. they are the ones who should be stating the Churchs stance and opinion on such subjects. I had to answer this question alot of times on my mission to New England and it was only for 3 purposes that such a question is ever asked. 1. Someone wants to know why God would Command such a thing (whatever it may be) and what's the benfit for them if they follow it. 2. Someone just does'nt understand the Logic behind it but is willing to hear what is said from our perspective. and 3. the occasional person who does'nt want to understand the topic at hand and just wants to Argue to prove a point. so my suggestion kyle would be to search out the info yourself through the Church's leaders in person or on Various Websites like LDS.org or Mormon.org. much better explained then what someone like me could explain. hope it helps bro!
    • Kyle Olson Haha dang I didn't think a big debate would happen! Thanks for the explanations!
    • Dane Graham Here's how I see it, I think caffeine has some addictive properties to it, and the church frowns upon anything addictive, a lot of LDS members drink caffeine, just comes down to choice. I think large amounts of caffeine have a lot of unhealthy consequences which also may be a reason why the church doesn't want its members to drink it. Wish I could tell ya more! Good question.
    • Erika Olson Coffee tastes good. A cup a day is good for you. How can some of you claim that you don't do it because it's bad and addicting when I'm sure most of you eat crappy food full of sugar, salt, and fat which is horrible for you and addicting as well. Following without question is dangerous and makes for a terrible back up in an argument. No one is going to take "I'm just told to do it" as a valid reason.
    • Cooper Jolley Ok I have one more point to make. If you say that you are against anything that can make you addicted, then you are against everything in this whole world. Religion is addicting. As I proved earlier water is addicting. Exercise is addicting. Everything has the potential to make you addicted. If you took the approach of keeping dangerous substances out of your body then you would have a much better case. Addiction isn't always bad
    • Lexie Hunsaker And to Cooper and Erika and a couple of others, amen! Couldn't have said it better myself.
    • Javier Villarreal Simple. People are hypocrites. We all are in different ways whether we want to admit it or not.
    • Colby McDermott You da man Ole!
    • Carla Stanford Hmm, I just thought I would answer your question to the best of my ability Kyle. I didn't know there was going to be so much anti-Mormon sentiment. I feel bad for you Cooper for feeling so attacked by Mormons. There was a time I wasn't LDS and I understand kind of how he feels, there are times I don't fit it with everyone. But, that happens, kind of like Alex said. Erika, it may be hard to understand, and believe me people struggle with all of the things you guys have mentioned and more. But, it is comforting and a big part of alot of peoples lives, who are and aren't Mormon who pray for an answer to help us figure out our lives. To us it is great when we are told just to do it. It's okay when we all donw't believe in the same thing, but it's great when you do find something to believe in. I just wish everyone happiness.
    • Kyle Olson Yeah I sure didn't think a big debate would happen haha. I respect everyone's opinion I was just wondering. Pretty fun reading all these arguments though I must say.
    • Taylor Ewell lol me too, sry that some are Anti and such. makes it hard to understand Truth does'nt it? my question is in return..what makes it so bad to not drink such things? do people have to get defensive about everything when in actuallity we are'nt attacking, we are just explaining our beliefs about such said topic? now yes i do agree people are hypocrits..that's just life and for those who have yet to spend time in the real world they will at some point recognize that it's true. you just have to look around and find the Honest ones out there.
    • woooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwww was all me and kris could say. just wow.
